Connecting WordPress

Put the chat on a WordPress site with the Swaru plugin, and let it recognise signed-in users and WooCommerce customers.

Before you start

  • Your site must be on https.
  • You need to be an admin of your company here, and an administrator of the WordPress site.
  • The plugin is not on wordpress.org yet. Write to hello@getswaru.com and we will send it as a zip, to upload under Plugins → Add New Plugin → Upload Plugin.

Connect

  1. In WordPress, go to Settings → Swaru and press Connect.
  2. Swaru opens. If it asks you to sign in, we email you a link: open it, then come back to that page and press Continue.
  3. Check the site's address, then press Connect. You are taken back to WordPress, connected.

The site's address joins your websites on the Chat page. If you have not named a docs site yet, the site's own pages become the chat's docs until you do.

No password or key is copied anywhere: the site and Swaru agree on two secrets of the site's own, which never pass through a browser.

What the plugin does

  • The chat on your pages, on every page except the ones you list under Pages without the chat, one path per line, such as /checkout.
  • Signed-in users: on Growth and Scale, the chat knows who a signed-in user is, so their conversation follows them to any device and a hand-off carries their address. Their name and email go to Swaru with their messages. Turn it off under Signed-in users. More in Signed-in visitors.
  • WooCommerce orders: on Growth and Scale, a signed-in customer can ask about their own orders. The chat reads their recent orders from your shop (number, date, status, total, items and tracking) and answers from them. It never changes an order: refunds and changes go to your team.
  • Contact forms: tick the Contact Form 7, WPForms or Gravity Forms forms whose messages should also arrive in your inbox, under Contact forms. Each one comes in with a reply suggested from your docs, and your team is emailed as for forwarded email. The form still sends its own email as before, so nothing is lost if Swaru is away. Passwords, payment details and uploaded files are never sent.

A site connected this way can only vouch for its own users, and only for orders in its own shop.

Messages from forms

A form message shows Form in the inbox, with the form and the page it was sent from. Anyone can type any address into a form, so it is marked *not verified*: check before sharing anything private. Each message is a conversation of its own, never added to an earlier one from the same address. Your reply goes to the address in the form under the subject "Your form message to" your company, and their answer comes back into the same conversation.

Anyone can send a public form, so forms have their own daily allowances, apart from your chat's and your email's: up to 25 suggested replies, 30 emails to your team and 200 messages from each site. Past them, messages still arrive in your inbox, without a suggestion or an email, and past the 200 only by the form's own email until the next day.

Disconnect

In WordPress, under Settings → Swaru → Disconnect, or here, under Integrations → Connected sites → Disconnect. Either way the chat stops on that site and Swaru forgets the site's secrets. Deleting the plugin disconnects it too.
